There is limited number of seats for an IPS officer that has been divided between two parts.

  • The candidates are directly appointed after competing for an IPS exam Conducted by UPSC put of that 65% of the candidates are appointed.
  • The other 35% of seats are available for the one who get promoted from respective state Cadre officers and are the most experienced one’s.

Designation according to the ranks are:

  • Superintendent of Police (SP) with time scale of Junior Scale, Senior scale, Junior Administrative scale, Selection Grade.
  • Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with only super time scale.
  • Inspector General (IG) with only super time scale.
  • Additional Director General (ADG) with only above super time scale.
