The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its supplement of manpower and aircraft assets ranks 4th amongst the air forces of the world. Its main mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed dissension. It was officially entrenched on 8 October 1932 as a supplementary air force of the British Empire which honored India’s air power service during World War II with the prefix Royal.  After India acquire independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the name Royal Indian Air Force was kept and served in the name of the dominance of India. With the government’s transformation to a Republic in 1950, the prefix Royal was detached after only 3 years. Since 1950 the IAF has been involved in 4 wars with neighboring Pakistan and one with the People’s Republic of China.

GROWTH AND PROMOTION IN INDIAN AIR FORCE

The growth and promotion of AIF will be based on two types as you can see in the above diagram. The promotion of the wing commander is based on seniority merit. A flying branch officer will eligible for the rank of group captain is after completing 16 years of service. The ground officer duty (non -flyers) will rank after 18 years of service as a captain. They will face promotion board NO.1 which is presided over by the Air Officer in Charge Personnel (AOP). Then the promotions of the rank of Air Commodore and Air Vice Marshal come under No. 2 Promotion Board of which the Vice Chief is the presiding officer. All suggestion of the Promotion Boards (1 and 2) are put for acceptance to the Ministry of Defence, which has the last say in all the matters of promotion.
